Barbara,
You did not mention if any medications were being recommended for the
mother. I worked with a mother of twins years ago who was diagnosed with
osteogenesis imperfecta. She was told that she could breastfeed one
month, and then would need to wean in order to start treatment with
Fosamax, which was new then. This particular mother actually decided to
extend her breastfeeding time a while longer since her case was not
severe and she seemed to be doing ok. I don't remember if she started on
the Fosamax during her breastfeeding, but we do have more information on
that drug now and it appears to be acceptable during breastfeeding. I
just did a quick search and discovered that there are some newer IV
drugs out as well. If this mother is a candidate for medication therapy,
perhaps she can buy some more time. It certainly is a difficult dilemma.
