While I would agree that some businesses/corporations may gave/donate money
without expectations of a return, most do not. If a business or corporation
had no expectation of some kind of return (in particular the good PR
resulting from donating), their gift would be given anonymously. But what
most companies know or expect is that their name will be broadcast in a
positive light. Name recognition is an important part of advertising.

Does money that is given ever come without strings attached? I would suggest
that from the personal to the corporate level that there is always a string
or strings attached (unless it is given anonymously). There is a level of
unwritten expectation that puts the recipient in the position of looking
favorably at that other person or corporation. For instance, let's say you
are organizing a Breastfeeding Conference and trying to get funds to provide
this wonderful educational experience. Funding has been difficult and you
are really short on the money. All of sudden some pump company is willing to
donate most of the money you need to do your Conference. How do you feel
about them after this? Hey I know how I'd feel. I'd more than likely throw
business their way. They help me out of a jam and I'd want to do something
nice for them in return. Its an unwritten obligation/contract. I believe
one would be a rare individual/business to be immune to that kind of
unwritten obligation.
