Dear Friends:
Jo-Anne says, "The other way of looking at this is that it gives the new
sister LOTS of opportunities to develop self-esteem and learn mothering
through the kind of apprenticeship that is no longer readily available in North
American society."
Jo-Anne is absolutely correct. And that is what I did. We talked about
how was this baby going to grow. How would they (mother and sister) double
their size? They thought about it; "Eat a lot" they said, almost in unison.
Right. I then asked if the baby got anything to grow on from the
pacifier. The lights came on! The sister got it very well. I asked her to remind her
mother to nurse the baby if she noticed feeding cues, and we demonstrated what
those were. The mother said that she could nurse the baby just 1-2 more times
a day; she feared the dread "...nursing all the time" feeling.
I am going back in a few days, and will give you all a report.
    warmly,
