I was involved in the Prodigy discussion that Melissa V spoke of here. We
were mightily flamed by abm-feeders as being "radical", and making them
feel guilty for not breastfeeding. Several of the mothers *defended* the
abm companies, saying that the abm was fine for their babies, and that
these companies would *never* hurt babies, that they really *cared* about
the infants! *Amazing*. We posted quotes from the "Politics of
Breastfeeding", etc, but to no avail. After literally months of going back
and forth, I came to the conclusion that these women *had* to defend their
choice as the best for them or they would be admitting that they didn't do
the best for their babies! And who could admit that?

Interestingly enough, one of the most rabid posters that was pro-abm and
pro-abm companies ended up months later posting to the LLL bulletin board
asking for help with sore nipples! (She had been pregnant while our
discussion was ensuing.) So you never can tell!

When I see a pregnant woman in the grocery store check-out line, I ask her
if she's planning to bf, and if she says "yes" or "I don't know", I give
her a card with my LLL number on it, and encourage her to call. I don't
ever mention abm at the store, but I do feel so sorry for the babies I see
in infant seats in the carts with bottles held or propped into thier mouths
-sigh-.

Sometimes I want to stand there and shriek at the top of my lungs about the
poison....but I don't.
