The September issue of MIDIRS Midwifery Digest (www.midirs.org) has an
original article on 'Developing and implementing hypoglycemia policies for
breastfed babies' by Sue Ashmore, deputy programme director of the UK Baby
Friendly Initiative. It is clear, excellent, referenced, and contains the
following statement:
'Only when no breastmilk is available, should artificial milk be considered.'
The reference given for that statement is the WHO document on 'Hypoglycemia of
the newborn: review of the literature'. Repeatedly in the article the
importance of avoiding non-human milks is emphasized. It is identified in
MIDIRS as a key article, meaning it can be considered essential reading for
anyone in our field.
