Dear Friends:

Apropos of the topic of baby-led feeding, remember that there are several
articles supporting what Ruth Lawrence MD, mother of 9, has said, i.e.
"....when we bottle-feed babies,we tend to overfeed them."

Control of intake rests with the bottle-holder for newborns. That's where
they learn to associate how their stomach feels with a good feeling. If
their stomach is stretched, they learn to associate 'streteched' with "good,
replete".

While so far the culprit seems to be formula, I wonder with the predominance
of bottle-feeding in day care, and caregivers ignorance of paced feeding
(where baby controls the intake) when the studies will show how babies can
be overfed with human milk. I saw a colleague reduced to weaning because
day care was using 40 precious ounces a day and she couldn't keep up and she
was so pressured and miserable....and had to use formula.

I wonder how babies breastfeed at home when they are overfed during the day.
What happens to the mother's supply in that situation? How does the nursing
dyad adapt?

warmly,
