Hi all,
I haven't posted in a while, but now I find I need your collective experience.
My niece has given birth to a "healthy" term infant - he was born on Monday in Johannesburg'
first baby, epidural, which ended in difficult vacuum and forceps delivery. Birth weight 3.430 kgs.
Dr. had stated that he wouldn't have a jaundice problem because of the blood type (didn't get the type), so they never checked. From Monday til Friday all seemed to being going fine. On Friday my niece started getting super strong contractions and started vomiting heavily. She was in much pain, and had to hand the baby over to her mom for care because she wasn't capable of coping. Now they have checked his bili levels prior to circ. and they hospitalized the baby because he has a bili of 21 and say they are going to keep him in for a week, and after it gets down to 12 they will keep him in for yet another week. They are giving him formula and my neice is pumping. My sister in law says that there is a stomach virus going around, which may account for the vomiting. and perhaps even add to the discomfort or uterine contractions. Altho would they commence only 5 days post partum? They gave her valoid for pain. (L3 according to Hale) Staff are saying that she should not bf because the virus can pass thru to the baby.

questions: has anyone experience a first time mom with such horrendous reactions to uterine contractions? can the reaction be delayed from the epidural? SIL says that when the new mom was a kid, she reacted very badly to anesthesia for dental work, vomitting, etc...could that be connected?

Anyone working in Johannesburg?
Thanks for your input.
