Has anyone recommended to the mom to first try a very basic diet?
Simply eating rice, millet, chicken, lamb, pears, carrots, summer squash
and zucchini and olive oil, salt and pepper.

A friend (who lurks on this list:)) tried this with her baby and had a
phenominal turn around quite quickly. She then added things back into
her diet, quickly realizing that the big triggers were dairy and corn.
While he showed no symptoms based on mom's gluten ingestion, tests
recently showed that gluten was unfortunately an issue.

We tend to be quick to say 'dairy' since diary is one dietary culprit
that's been studied and shown to cause problems, but many many many
other things can cause problems as well.

If mom starts with a basic diet and goes from there, she can usually
very very quickly figure out what the problem is while still getting
plenty of calories in her diet.

FE, it's not hard to bake a bunch of chicken or turkey and keep it in
the fridge for easy access....ditto for making a big pot of millet or
rice. Easy to steam or sautee a bunch of zuchhini, summer squash and
eat raw carrots and pears.

It's easy and non-invasive. Mom has plenty to eat (though limited
variety at first)...and if baby is doing well in say, three days or so,
it gives mom the desire to keep going and find out what's going on.
Obviously, this approach isn't for everyone, but it does sound like this
mom is highly motivated and that a food culprit is at work since baby is
reported to be happy as a clam when on the lactose free (dairy free? ,
definitely gluten free) formula.

Once adding things back in, mom quickly gets a sense of which groups to
add in when and wether or not they bother baby.

I can only relate the personal experience that Alana had *constant*
URI's that were 'normal' per the ped, and we both had constant
thrush....neither of us have had any since she went GF. She had *at
least* one URI per month since 3 mos of age.......and has now had four
between 19 mos and 40 mos of age despite starting school at 29 mos.
