Thanks to Rachel, Jan etal for the great posts on crying, definitely 1 of my
3 top hot buttons as well!
Anecdotally, I remember both of my neighbors with my first 2 children looking
at me suspiciously while remarking on the fact that they "never heard the
baby cry" as if I was drugging it or smothering it with a blanket or something!
How sad it always is to hear mothers remark on how much they hated their
child 's infancy and inevitably it has everything to do with the amount of crying.
I don't believe that the crying hours as referenced in many of these
parenting books come from anything other than the pedis attempt to console or placate
the parents of the colicky infant and like many things, it just evolved into
*fact* . Perhaps the most stressful part of my NICU/nursery days were the fact
that babies were left to cry. I can't even guess how many times I have seen a
group of MDs/Rns conferencing around the warmer of a screaming infant with
no attempt made to quiet....grrrr...
