PS. And one more thought about having references. It seems that we, as
health professionals , are always scrambling for references to refute a
practice that another more powerful health care professional advises....

It is an interesting and uncomfortable phenomenon...

The onus of responsibility to prove the safety of a practice or piece of
medical advice is on the physician or lactation consultant or nurse who
gives it out. It is not our place to be on the defensive and to figure out
ways to scramble to refute their bad advice. We should be putting them on
the offensive, asking politely though persistently for references to back
their practice, if we have a question or issue.

When we run to find references, instead of asking others for theirs, we
place ourselves in a position of being the lesser, weaker, and more
powerless partner in a discussion where we often know more about the
science of lactation than our counterparts who are "calling the shots."
This is not an excuse to be rude, or demanding, or unprofessional. This is
a call for us to ask for our due as fellow professionals, and treat others
with the respect that we ourselves deserve and demand.

When we defend, we admit that we show a weakness that we do not need to show.

Off my soapbox. This certainly has nothing to do with Ann Perry's note, and
everything to do with the past 15 years of work I've done in my area, here,
and also online, and here on Lactnet.

Stand strong, proud, and quietly respectful. Use lactation science as your
base, and you will not need to scramble.

Kathleen
