Hi wise ones,
Has anyone heard of a study reported in Health Service Research in Dec 2005 titled "Improved Estimates of the benefits of breastfeeding using sibling comparisons to reduce selection bias." It is from the Dept of Economics, Mills College, Oakland, CA.
They compared 2,734 sibling pairs, one sibling breastfed, the other not breastfed, and the findings, accding to the abstract are: Nearly all the correlations found in the between family model become statistically insignificant in the within family model. The notable exception is .......cognitive ability. These findings hold whether breastfeeding is measured in terms of duration or as a Yes/No variable.
OK, the reason I'm asking is that tomorrow at 8:30 AM I leave for a meeting with area HCPs and physicians about breastfeeding. This is one of the major points that is on the agenda which I just received today, and I'm not quite sure where to start to dispute it. If anyone has some quick advice, I'd sure like to hear it!!
Thanks,
Mary Taylor, CA LLLL, IBCLC
