This is a tongue tie, just a different type. It calls for a
frenuloplasty, an operation where the doctor makes a horizontal incision
at the base of the thick attachment of the tongue to the floor of the
mouth, and sews the incision up vertically. Have had a baby in my
practice have this procedure, and it did the trick. The surgery requires
a general anesthetic, but is relatively simple. A tongue this immobile
would cause many difficulties later in life, so this mom should have it
evaluated by a competent ent (otolaryngologist) whether or not she
continues to breastfeed.
