Just a quick update on the nomination of Miriam Labbok for the post of
Surgeon General:
Dr. Labbok is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine
with training in pediatrics. She is an Associate Professor in the Dept of
Obstetrics and Gynecology at Georgetown University. She serves as the
Director of Breastfeeding and Maternal/Child Health at the Institute for
Reproductive Health in Washington, D.C., and is the Director of the WHO
Collaborating Center on Breastfeeding. She is on the medical advisory board
of La Leche League International and ILCA
NABA (National Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy) has been working
with Dr. Labbok to secure her nomination for the post of Surgeon General.
Following a strategy meeting with an advocacy lobbyist, NABA submitted a
letter recommending Miriam for the Surgeon General post. The letter was
received by the White House and an acknowledgement sent thanking NABA for the
recommendation and stating that it was being forwarded into channels.
Next is the nomination stage where congressional and organizational
support will be secured for this to become a reality. It is not time for
letters yet, but anyone with ties to Congress is asked to get in touch with
myself or Barbara Heiser at [log in to unmask]
Feel free to call or e-mail me with your questions or thoughts. NABA is
under the direction of Karin Cadwell, Barbara Heiser and myself. It is a
not-for-profit organization which functions to lobby for breastfeeding and
serve in a coordinating manner to help structure breastfeeding promotional
efforts in the US
