I always say in LLL meetings that "feeding the mother helps to feed the baby".
In other words, Dad can do all the cooking (and washing up) in the immediate
postpartum period (or ever after, which sounds nice also) while mom does what
she does: feeds the baby. How many times has a new mom sat down to nurse,
only after latching on and getting positioned well, realized that she hasn't
eaten in hours and is famished? And thirsty, too! Father-made food tastes
even better than that which Mom has had to make one-handed while cradling baby
in the other hand. And you know that newborns have a little baby radar which
tells them to cry and need to be fed the minute Mom's fork spears the first
noodle, so help in cutting the meat or getting a straw to drink the soup would
also be appreciated.

BTW, "Feeding mom helps to feed the baby" applies for well-meaning friends
and relatives who also want to share in the feeding!
