Roxanna, has this mother tried either Sudified or birth control  pills?  
There is also herbs such as fresh sage and the mint family.
I wonder if she might need to have her pituitary evaluated.  At this  point 
postpartum she shouldn't be having over production.  How often does  her baby 
nurse?
Have the mastitis been in one breast, alternating, or occurring in both  
breast at the same time?  
I agree that she should not wean abruptly.
I hope her doctor is willing to hear her goals and help her achieve them  
along with addressing her problem.
