About the mother nursing and being worked up for "infertility", there are
some corrections I have learned about. The baby is actually 30 months old,
and they have been trying to get pregnant for 20 months. The doctor that
was urging birth control in the first few months, is *not* the same as the
one suggesting weaning now. Her cycles are *not* regular, but rather
irregular. Sorry for the mistakes.

About turning blue at the breast. Well, your story is convincing, but
babies have very unstable vascular systems, and often turn blue, or at least
parts of them do (legs, arms etc). Central cyanosis occasionally occurs as
well, but rarely what you describe there. I wonder why a normal healthy
baby would tolerate not breathing. It is possible that narcotics could do
it. There was an article somewhere a couple of years ago from Australia
that described the same thing. But it must be uncommon.

Humbly,

Jack Newman, MD, FRCPC
