Susie said that breastfed infants who begin solid foods 'are displacing
breast milk with solids'. Actually, nutritionally adequate complementary
foods should be offered in addition to breast milk. At around six months
breastmilk is no longer sufficient to maintain growth and development on its
own. Hence the recommendation that infants begin complementary foods.
These foods are given in addition to breastfeeding, which should continue
into the third year and beyond. Have a look at the Global Strategy for
Infant Feeding. Have a look at The Optimal Duration of Exclusive
Breastfeeding. Replacing a nutrient dense food with less dense foods
doesn't make any sense when your tummy is as small as that of an infant.
