Cindy,
Animals nurse without help when their birth and culture is not disturbed
by humans. Even animals mess up at bfing when they are interfered with.
The baby gorillas at the Bronx zoo are being reared by humans, because
their parents have lost their parenting skills, including bfing knowlege,
from generations of having their babies ripped away. Makes some
parallels to hospital protocols and nurseries, huh? The tiger trainer
from the Clyde Beatty Cole Circus told me that his tigers will only let
their cubs nurse from 2 - 4 weeks, then start to scratch them and even
injure them. In the wild, tigers nurse at least 8 weeks, while teaching
the growing cubs to hunt. So, many other animals are in no better shape
than their human (animals too) cousins as far as parenting and
breastfeeding skills go.
