On our postpartum unit, the peds do the exams in mothers' rooms. Some
will even put the baby at the foot of Mom's bed, rather than in the
plastic box.

For those hospitals with policies that have babies in the nursery for
hours for the convenience of the peds, what would happen if mothers
began to *refuse* to allow staff to take them to the nursery? We need
to encourage mothers to accept, and demand, the right to decide where
their babies go, or don't go, and when. (Of course emergency
situations are the exception here)

This practice also impacts the nursing staff...it takes TIME to round
up the babies and then shuttle them back again, time that could be
spent <gasp> actually providing patient care and education...

Carole
