Dear Lactnetters,
Pat in N.J. askes if the statement about dioxin in mothers milk is true. I
understand how hard to swallow that statement is (no pun intended :-) ).
However, since we eat the dairy products of cows, we are further up the food
chain, and our milk is higher still.
Sandara Steingraber is a rare individual. She is both a poet and a
scientist. I recommend her book Living Downstream. It is beautifully
written, passionate, and highly informative. Caution-you are likely to find
yourself an activist in yet another cause!
It's important to keep in mind that although human milk is very high in
dioxin and other carcinogens, our children have lower risk of many forms of
cancer. Probably partly because some cancers are infectious in origen, and
breastfed children have better immune function and less illness, and partly
for many other reasons yet to be discovered.
Still, I agree with Steingraber, that our precious milk is tainted is an
obscene violation.
