I had a pump rental station for a while and was once accused of using an
application for LLL leadership to make contact with more mothers to rent
pumps to.

I finally decided that I didn't have the time and had lost too much
money (from giving things away for free or discounting them) and gave
them up. But it think my reasons for doing it while I did are probably
shared by many others who do private pump rentals.

The main reason was that there was a need! Only one place in the county
we live in even had any and they were usually out, and they did not have
anyone who was able to advise women in using them. Other than that, the
only choice was the mostly lousy pumps available at K-Mart and other
stores, or going quite a ways away to find one elsewhere.

We do now have another place in town that rents pumps and usually has
one available. I still feel kind of bad because I know that they jack
the prices way up on things, but not bad enough to go back to renting
them. I'm sure alot of others are much better business people than I
am, but I can't imagine anyone making very much money on pump rentals.
I see private pump rentals mostly as a service to mothers, not a
business. It is really unfair that anyone should be accused of being
opportunistic because they work with nursing moms and also rent pumps.
It is really the same as someone who works with alot of adoptive
mothers, like I do, selling or recommending nursing supplementers. They
are necessary, so you really cannot give advice about adoptive nursing
and then not provide information about where to get what they need!

Just my 2 cents on this one.
