I just started coloring my gray, so this is my own opinion and research.
Most of my knowledge of drugs and chemicals is related to whether they are
safe for gestating and lactating women. I am not doing either at the
moment, but cringe at the thought of thinking something could be safe for me
now if it wouldn't be okay during the reproductive cycle.

I settled on using henna and cassia to dye my hair. Nothing scary there at
all, no fumes, no chemical sensitization, no frying of hair, and a track
record of centuries. There are mixtures that can reproduce pretty much any
hair color out there. It's important to get body-art-quality henna, so that
you know you don't have other things added in. The only downside is that
it's permanent, which may be more than some women want.

So that is at least another option you can mention to moms who are concerned
about the safety of chemical hair dyes.
