I find that old ideas really die hard!  I don't know how many times
I have done an inservice or commented directly to a nurse about
current recommendations/research only to hear the same old stuff
coming from their mouths!
Sometimes it is helpful to point out that we used to say/recommend
things that we now know are out of date.  One of my favorite lines
is, "I wish I knew half of what I know now back when my kids were
babies!"  It also helps to tie new info to other info where there
has been a change in thinking.  Such as: "We used to say that babies
should be put to sleep on their tummies.  Now we know that that
wasn't the best advice, although it was common knowledge and
practice not that long ago."  Another helpful comment is,
"Breastfeeding doesn't change, but our understanding of how it works
and how to make it work better do change as we learn more and more
about it."
