My area of research is mastitis (Previously - incidence, characteristics,
management and risk factors and currently physiology and biochemistry of
mastitis). I have just published a recent paper addressing the problems you
raise, and the difficulties associated with differentiating non infective
and infective mastitis. For anyone who might be interested, the reference
