Hi everyone,
I know this has been covered, but I just ran across some information from
another list that I am on. This information comes from Hopkins Q&A: A
Warning on Hepatitis C, September 5, 1997, Baltimore. This was from an
interview with Paul G. Auwaerter, M.D., assistant professor of medicine
and an infectious disease expert at the Johns Hopkins Medical
Institutions. I'll just post the information relevant to breastfeeding.
IH: If it turns out that you are infected, is your spouse at risk
through
sexual contact? Can a pregnant woman pass on Hepatitis C to her fetus or
nursing infant?
Dr. Auwaerter: ...Breast-feeding is not viewed as dangerous, and
although low levels of the virus may be found in breast milk, it does not
appear to cause infection,
probably because the gut inactivates the virus. Transmission from mother
to
baby is in the range of zero to 18 percent, mainly due to blood in the
birth trauma at delivery.
Aloha,
