I wanted to give you an update on the baby I wrote about two weeks ago with
severe GER. He was seven weeks old and was gaining about an ounce a week
despite his mother's copious milk supply. His projectile vomiting was so
immediate during and after feeds, that after seeing him, I was surprised
that he was even gaining an ounce! Since his symptoms were so indicative
of pyloric stenosis, a total of three upper GI's and two ultrasounds of
the pylorus were performed. Pyloric stenosis was repeatedly ruled out.

The mother has reported to me that her now nine week old baby has been
hospitalized and is being fed with an NG tube. He has been diagnosed with
cystic fibrosis. The doctors are so concerned about his malnourished state
that they are adding HMF to his mother's breastmilk in an effort to boost
his calories. In addition he is receiving pancreatic enzyme replacement
therapy. They are performing tests to see what systems the cystic fibrosis
is affecting. There doesn't seem to be pulmonary involvement at this time.

If anyone has pertinent information for this mother about CF and
breastfeeding (other than information that is found in Riordan/Auerbach or
Lawrence) please let me know! I would like to be of further help to this
mother, who feels overwhelmed at this point.
