Dear Yvonne,

Welcome to "postingdom" and this thought is probably only part of the picture
in BF couple you describe but may be part of where you start with her. When
I hear from moms that a baby under a yr (or 2, for that matter) BF 4-5 times
a day I wonder why. Was there initial oversupply that stops baby from
wanting to nurse except when hunger is extreme and she has to, and then it's
all business and no leisurely dining, nor nursing for comfort? Has mom in
any way scheduled feeds? Is baby BF during the night at all? Other siblings
demanding of time? Did baby always BF so infrequently or was it that 4 mos
time when baby is distractable and mom misinterpreted and didn't offer breast
more frequently?

UTI (urinary tract infection) can be cause of weight loss but that may only
be part of picture, too. I like to see moms and babes to get a good picture
of their relationship and how BF "looks" both technically and psychologically
and there's nothing like seeing the home to get a feel for what goes on that
a phone conversation never gives.

Once info is gathered and mom listened to re her feelings and ideas, I would
suggest more frequent offering of breast, a breastfeeding holiday where mom
and babe have lots of skin to skin contact, mom, topless, could play on floor
with baby, letting baby crawl to her or be positioned (if not crawling) on
her knees in play next to mom's chest-the whole idea is to let baby know this
inviting, soft, delicious breast is for the taking. Sling wearing
bare-chested in hip carry so baby can sip at will also proves helpful.

Hope these ideas are helpful and as I said may or may not be part of the
picture. Allergy might be a factor, too. Good Luck!
