Quantum is a TV show on Australia, about science topics, etc. Last
night they had a segment on 'baby diets'. It was excellent. It was
about a study in ?Sydney about *when* babies were ready for solids.
It assumed breastfeeding. (Even saw one mum feeding and a reference
to 'a quick breastfeed to settle' after baby had been measured and
was a bit upset.)

The thing I was most pleased about was the concept of there being no
one 'right' time by figures (ie age) but that babies will show
individual readiness cues. Yeah!!! I have preached this for some time
now to mums. Great to see it being confirmed by people who actually
study real babies.

I have always used indicators like being able to sit unaided, grab
objects with fingers, etc, but another one mentioned was babbling.
This is considered a developmental stage that indicates that babies
are ready for more complex type foods (ie lumpier). I thought that
was interesting. One I use that they didn't mention was the
tongue-thrust reflex. Pity, especially when they showed some babies
having commercial jarred baby food being shovelled in and it was all
over their faces! *And* the babies didn't look like they could sit
unaided - they were lying back in strollers! Still, can't have
everything!
