Dear Lactnet Friends:

The question has been asked about the impact of breastfeeding on
miscarriage.

I am not aware of any research that describes or supports any link between
these two events. Women do breastfeed through pregnancy and go on to do
tandem nursing. I remember one case where the mother was tandem nursing 4
children of different pregnancies.

The placenta drives the supply, and the nursling will receive newborn milk
from about the middle of the pregnancy onwards until after the birth. In
the first trimester, I am not sure what is happening.

If the mother knows she is at risk for premature labor, she is advised to
wean during pregnancy.

What do you know about this?

warmly,
