In Texas, we used the umbrella organization Healthy Mothers/Healthy Babies
as a structure to organize our breastfeeding task force. HMHB is national,
and has work groups that focus on diff. maternal-child health issues (others
include immunization, car seat safety, prenatal care, etc). Bfg was already
one of their big focus issues. We have meetings quarterly, so far always
physically located in the Texas Dept. of Health headquarters here in Austin
(the capitol) which is in the center of our geographically large state.
While the focus is strictly bfg, the attendees are a diverse bunch. They
include physicians, researchers, LCs, peer counselors, La Leche League
leaders, public health people, and sometimes policy people. It is a good
networking organization, and has been the brainstorming grounds for some of
the big initiatives Texas has engaged in such as our successful lobbying
effort to get a law passed to protect women's right to breastfeed in public.
Currently we are working on ideas for providing clinical practicums to LC
candidates. We worked on a brochure to urge workplace support for bfg
women, and have put on conferences. There is no end of projects such a
group can come up with. Some years local chapters of HMHB have sold things
(mugs, bags, etc) to raise money and also conf. money has been used to fund
projects. An important organizing priniciple is to understand that in unity
there is strength. We can get more done when we work cooperatively.
