The problem I see with a high palate is baby has been compensating
with the lips and chewing. I am working with a mom who has a baby who
absoultely cannot suck at the breast or with a bottle because the
palate is so high. Interesting, no tongue issues and I was surprised
not to find anything. Granma mas there and was relieved to know it
was not her fault her own child was crying and hungry and hurting her
before she finally quit! Poor baby has a very high palate and a
strong gag reflex that does not allow even the most little tip of the
bottle nipple in to chew for food...then of course gags on the bolus
of milk. Tried to get pediatrician to address it, but his theory is
the baby is gaining weight well and however that is happening is fine.
Had mom go back to be sure there was nothing more than a high palate
and to check for why the baby has such a hard time swallowing and not
gagging....doctor not concerned. Baby weight is good. Yes, the baby
is gaining and that is good, but this baby cries with every single
feeding and is never happy eating. I suggested mom request a referral
to an slp for evaluation. The only problem with that being even when
or if she gets the referral, no guarantee there will be any
understanding of breastfeeding. But at least maybe the baby will be
able to enjoy being fed.
