Dr. Mimi's term "lactation literate" is excellent! The parallel to "computer literate" is obvious. While I am computer "literate," my husband is a true computer "professional." I want nothing more from my computer than to have it work reliably and peacefully. I neither know nor care how it works except when it talks back to me. The Professional gets "under the hood" and makes it work to my liking, fixes the glitches, interfaces with the software vendors, installs new features, etc. and knows how it works, down to the microscopic composition of the memory chips. (He gets paid well for these skills, by the way.)

Not everyone needs to be a lactation professional and know how to spell "galactopoiesis." Most moms do just fine because the system works just fine most of the time. However, having many (most?) professionals "lactation literate" would be delightful so they don't mess up a fine system by doing or saying something dumb.
