Several good points have been made about whether or not apno is
needed, and how much it costs. And, yes, in the interest of
controlling healthcare costs, these factors should be taken into
account.
Back to the original post, though, I wonder if the reason the
pharmacist won't send it home, is that it is not properly labeled. For
example, if it is an inpatient med, the nurse sort of controls it, and
has the order for how to use it. When an outpatient gets a medicine,
it is labeled for the pt to apply it to herself.
So if it has been determined that a pt needs apno, perhaps there is a
way to have it labeled for home use. The doctor probably has to write
the order and state label for home use or send home with pt, or
something like that. If this situation comes us in the LC's practice,
he/she could talk to docs and pharma and see what could be done.
At my hospital, moms who get lanolin (I'm not a fan of giving this
out) get it in a box and take it home.
