I am having a hard time understanding why giving time in the sun is not on
the list of the umpteen things peds tell parents to do for their babes. I
would assume they could fit in somewhere between how to schedule the feeds
and where the baby should sleep. Seems simple enough. It will really depend
on where on this planet the baby is and I would think even the time of year.
I remember my first visit to the pediatrician with my baby 14 years ago. He
said when you back to the car keep her uncovered and when you walk into the
house with her keep her uncovered. I looked at him with a dopey expression
and asked "why?' He smiled and said for her daily dose of D. We live in
Florida and sunshine is not in short supply. Surely, instead of supplements
we could determine a safe amount of sun exposure based on location and season
for a natural source. Truthfully, even before I knew supplements were not
necessary, I would most likely would have forgotten to give them anyway. I
would think we would be better off giving permission and encouraging a bit of
sunshine than expecting parents to be consistant with supplements for
something that may or may not be an issue for their baby. (Not the same as
meds for a sick child--most parents would probably remember that, maybe even
me.)
