Put me in the "why bother" camp, too, when it comes to infant cereal.
It's less nutritious than lots of other things that 6-month babies
can eat.

That said -- infant formula, when used for mixing with solid foods
and not as a replacement for breastfeeding, is acceptable stuff. It
is a nutritious 'milk' that may be better tolerated than yogurt, due
to the cow's milk proteins being modified during processing. If you
evaluate it against other solid foods that a baby might eat, it
stacks up pretty well.

Most mothers in the US receive formula samples from the makers.
Mixing it with solid foods is a decent way to use it up. If a mother
would need to *purchase* formula to mix with cereal, I would suggest
juice or pureed fruit instead, so that she is not adding to the
formula companies' profits.

Most of us, including me, have an almost visceral reaction to the
word 'formula' . . . but nevertheless it is a reasonable food when
viewed as part of a baby's solids.
