I think maybe I wasn't clear in my earlier post that the statements about
physical discipline with a spoon, progressing to a belt, are from the Ezzo's
curriculum, not from the wonderful book "How to Really Love Your Children."
I would never advocate hitting a child for any reason.

Re: smoking and ABM, they make such a wonderful comparison because they are
both harmful to the health, and yet are backed by extremely powerful,
financially lucrative industries who make money when people use their
products. They both have enormous clout because of their financial
resources. They both have government subsidies to help support their
profits (tobacco growers price supports, WIC programs that buy tons of
formula). They both started small and grew to the point where it was the
norm to use their products and noone thought anything of it. The medical
research about the dangers has had a hard time getting into the popular
media because of the power of advertising dollars. With smoking, times are
a changin' ---- hopefully breastfeeding is just a few decades behind. Today
it is considered not the norm to smoke any more, you no longer see cigarette
ads on TV, and people freely talk about the dangers of its use. Someday the
same will be true of ABM. May we all live to see that day.

If Peggy Robin's book were really aimed at the tiny tiny fraction of women
who cannot overcome problems breastfeeding, it would have been written that
way, and she wouldn't have needed to distort and lie about the medical
research in order to make her point. It also would be marketed only through
Lactation Consultants, to be given to their clients when all else has failed
and they *have* to use ABM, instead of being on the general infant care
shelves at every neighborhood bookstore.
