I've been thinking about what we communicate when we select nomenclature
("SIN" for formula) that not-so-subtly seeks to shame people for their
choices. It seems to be human nature that people resist covert efforts to
control their behavior, even if it is for their own good. Most people are
plenty smart enough to be aware of you doing it, and it creates RESENTMENT
(not guilt or desire to reform). Once resentment at feeling manipulated
becomes part of the interpersonal dynamic, your chances for real
communication are crippled.

I think we need to be careful that we present ourselves as a profession that
is honest enough to speak straightforwardly to mothers about changing their
behavior rather than sneaking up on them and clobbering them with judgements
and condemnations. Feeding choice honestly may never have been closely
examined before, and there may be hidden issues influencing their choices
that we cannot know.

Courtesy is the foundation of communication.
