In the hospital I last worked at, the staff was supposed to help the mom nurse
before getting the LC to see the pt. Almost all of our moms nursed and there
was no way the LC could see every one. A big problem with the nurses was not
following set protocol. All nurses receive an orientation to breastfeeding in
their orientation. We were required to watch the mom nurse and evaluate the
feed. Moms would get overwhelmed because the info they were taught wasn't
consistent. Some nurses do undermine breastfeeding, offering the baby a paci or
even feeding it in the nursery without permission ( the feeding part is direct
violation of protocol and could get you reprimanded and should.)
As Sara said not all nurses are bad. It's a shame when some folks lump us all
together. I'm a nurse and very pro-breastfeeding.
