Hello!
My name is Jodie Vonasek. I am a nursing student at the
University of North Dakota. I have a friend who is expecting twins and is
wondering if she dares to try and breastfeed for two. She had full
intentions to when she thought it was for one. But, finding out there was
two has made her wonder if she could handle it and if she would have
enough milk supply. I have researched the topic and would appreciate your
knowledge on this issue.
Mead (1992) noted that when babies breastfeed often and
effectively, a healthy milk supply usually follows. Mohrbacher and Stock
(1996) noted that breastfeeding offers special advantages for the mother
of multiples. Their examples given were similar to Gromada and Spangler
(1998). These consisted of cost savings, enforced maternal rest periods,
instant availability of breast milk, immunity factors in human milk, and
closeness/bonding with multiple infants.
Now that I have this information, I am curious to hear if anyone
out there has dealt with a situation such as this. I would appreciate
your thoughts on this issue. Thank you, Jodie Vonasek, College of Nursing
Student, University of North Dakota
