I don't have any references to back myself up, but I understood that the
primary way breastfeeding served as a protection was from the mother
sleeping with or very close to her baby.  The baby would hear the mother's
breathing and feel her body movements which would prevent the baby from
falling into the deepest sleep in which they *forget* to breathe., and that
possibly the mother's exhaled breath encouraged the baby to breathe.  Am I
totally off in this understanding?
