Personally, I am a skinny minny- 5'5" and about 120# (162 cm and 55 Kg), I
wear a size 1-2. With each pregnancy I gained 35-40# and within a week
after birth was wearing my prepregnancy jeans (much to the displeasure of my
friends). I have been nursing for 10.5 straight years, tandem nursed twice
(for 2-3 years each time) and my oldest two did not wean until they each
turned 6 years old. The weight on me falls off right away and I am STARVING
most of the time, I wake up in the middle of the night hungry. I eat bigger
portions than my husband and still lose weight. My periods do not return
until each nursling reaches their 2nd birthday.

I think those that have fast metabolism stay skinny and lose weight faster
when breastfeeding and many will not have their periods return until late.
While those with a slower metabolism gain weight faster, keep it on longer
and get their periods sooner.

leave it to this subject of all the very compelling subjects discussed here
to bring me out of lurkdom!

i disprove the above theory - very reluctantly ! my stats were very much
the same as the above poster's. never more than 120 lbs, 5'3", very athletic
and a size 4 all my life. formula fed as a baby (formula and PUDDING MIX b/c my
mom thought i was too skinny as a baby - she was 15 when i was born, 'nuff
said?)

i got pg w/ #1, had him at 7 1/4 mos, bf'ed exclusively to 11 mos (when he
started solids) - no pacis, never a bottle, nothing but the best straight from
the tap. got my period back at 8 wks postpartum! was pg again when he was 8
mos old. he nursed through the entire pgc and i tandem nursed them
simultaneously until each was 5 yo. before the 2nd turned 5, i had my 3rd and was
nursing all 3. i have 4 now and w/ each one, i get my period back about a week or 2
after lochia has ceased. (they do all sleep through the night from birth,
tho - which i think accounts for the rapid return of cycles and fertility -
they go 7-8 stretches w/out nursing right from birth!)

imm after birth, i lose around 18 lbs and then it just stops. my body hangs
onto the weight. i've joined weight watchers and have slogged along losing
1-2 lbs a week, but my body just seems to think it needs every pound to feed
the troops or something. not until my pair of nurslings start taking more
solids than milk do i begin to have real weight loss. when my youngest nursling
reaches 2-3, then the pounds just melt off and i find i am losing 4-6 a week
w/ little to no effort. i've been bfing for almost 7 yrs straight w/out a
break now and 51/2 of those yrs were 2 or more at a time...including tandeming
through pgc's...and triandeming for part of my last pgc...i've developed the
half-baked theory that my body is sure i am nursing a small army and it is
going to need all the fat stores it can hang on to!

the bright side is i have made friends in the last 6 3/4 yrs who have no
idea that i am really a fit and slender person under all this mama padding! i
can't wait to see their faces when all these kids finally wean (about 4 more
years, but who's counting !!) and i really lose all this weight. if i still
know them by then. my mom says if the weight loss effects of all this nursing
happen for me retroactively, one day when they all wean i will wake up and be
a walking piece of mumma jerky !! LOL

on a more serious topic, my now 2 yo has been diagnosed w/ epilepsy.
(tonic-clonic, generalized seizures). he started having them at 17 mos. not febrile,
all the mri's and ct scans are normal. developmentally and behavior-wise,
he's on track and totally normal. he was the one born w/ polydactyly and a
true knot in his cord, some may recall. we've also pursued exhaustive genetic
testing and chromosomal analysis to rule out any genetic defect syndromes. all
also normal so far. we have the peds neuro's taciturn acquiescence in holding
off starting him on meds (trileptal is the drug of choice for him) until we
can observe one more seizure to determine if it could be linked to a virus. i
have wondered many times if breastfeeding is helping w/ this issue. if
anyone here knows...or can direct me to someplace else i can inquire - i would be
very grateful !

to add to the fun, my 10 month old baby girl was just diagnosed w/
life-threatening, anaphylactic peanut allergy 2 wks ago. i just KNOW instinctively
breastfeeding has got to help w/ this (of course i have eliminated all legumes,
nuts and shellfish from my own diet and home)... but i am wondering if anyone
knows if there might be any stats or research on the 'cure' rate of children
diagnosed this young who were breastfed. our allergist tells us 95% chance
it will be a lifelong, life threatening affliction.

i just feel w/ absolute certainty but no proof that bfing them both is going
to at least help make both of these issues less severe than they otherwise
would be and i'd love some corresponding info to help bolster my shaky
convictions!

thanks in advance and everyone have safe and happy holidays!
