Margaret, I asked a chiropractor student friend of mine your question about
the pancreatic enzymes and this was her response:
Dear Margaret,
It says in the abstract titled "Resolution of Stool Blood in Breastfed
Infants with Maternal Ingestion of Pancreatic Enzymes" published in the Journal of
Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition vol. 20, No. 4, October 1999, p.500,
that Pancrease MT 4 has the following make-up:
Lipase 4,000 USP (digest lipids or fats)
Amylase 15,000 USP (digest carbohydrates or sugars)
Protease 12,000 USP (digest proteins)
and patients were taking 2 with each meal.

In my opinion, as long as you are buying an enzyme from a good company with
similar or higher USP values it should work in the same manner. Any difference
between a OTC and prescription preparation would be in standardization of the
product, but as long as you are getting your supplements from a good company,
I don't see any reason why the OTC enzymes wouldn't have the same action. I
highly recommend a company called Pure Encapsulations. They have high quality
standards and are good about maintaining consistency of dosage from batch to
batch. They have a formula called "Pancreatic Enzyme Formula" (porcine enzymes)
that lists the USP values. Check them out at http://www.purecaps.com/ I'm not
sure if the general public can buy them directly from the company, but they
should be able to help you find someone in your area that may carry them. Other
high quality supplement companies include Biotics, Metagenics, OrthoMolecular,
and Now and may have similar formulas.

I agree that the research is quite limited on this topic. However, I think it
is definitely worth a try on a case to case basis. Based on the action of the
enzymes, the risk of side effects is extremely low.

I would definitely try it if I were in your shoes!

Best of luck,
