i nursed during two pregnancies. during pregnancy no. 2 (leo) i felt all the
presumed feelings of irritation, anxiety, etc., although not too strongly. my
nipples were indeed more sensitive. my son weaned towards the end of the
pregnancy, and he was almost three.

during pregnancy no. 3 (laura), i nursed leo throughout without ever feeling
those previous ambivalent feelings. you can tell i had no modesty. here i was,
bigger than two barns, nursing a three and a half year old that was so large
for his age that he looked five, anytime and anywhere, oblivious to public
comment. actually no one ever said anything. those people are probably still
frozen in disbelief.

he nursed one night and caused labor to finally begin, a great relief as she
was vastly overdue. he continued to nurse until his sister was four months
old, and was always generous and even courteous about it.the tandem nursing
was a beautiful thing. i always felt my older son weaned during pregnancy not
just because of my ambivalent feelings but also because of pacifier use.
