Subject: Rights of Lactating College Women

Jeffrey S. Fouche:

Is there a Women's Center, Minorities Center, or a Women's Studies Dept. on
campus? They would be good places to start, since their missions generally
include the support of women and minorities, with the ultimate goal of
insuring their academic success. Also, for personal issues such as
breastfeeding/pumping, an assistant dean of students would probably be a
better person to ask for assistance than an academic person like a
professor. Also, she could go to the student health service for advice on
this. A final thought: are there any professors who are women, who have
small children, and might possibly have breastfed? They might be willing to
share their own offices for the purpose of pumping. Even if they aren't
sympathetic, the simple act of asking will expose them to the concept of
pumping and they may be better prepared to help the next person who comes along.

One of the things I have learned is that there are many avenues within a
university, and you just need to find the person with a vested interest in
solving your problem.
