I would very much like to find a research paper that discusses this.  Isn't that why iron fortified formula is now so widely recommended?  Weren't infants becoming anemic because of this bleeding?  I once mentioned that I heard this at a conference and it was received with disbelief and shock by my co-workers -- I looked around on the web for a bit but couldn't really find anything to back it up so have kept quiet about it ever since.
