Occasionally the shells will slip while a Mom is asleep- this can result in
an uncomfortable compression of the nipple- especially if using the shells
with hard plastic backs.

Gretchen, it was not clear if this mother was prenatal or postpartum. I am
going to assume she is prenatal. If a pregnant woman wants to try nipple
shells, I instruct her to start wearing them for a couple hours a day and
gradually work up to a full day. She is always to remove them when she is
sleeping. They could cause a problem to her breast just as you described by this
mother.
