I saw a mom today who is worried that her 2-week old baby "may not be getting
enough". When I asked why, she says that her baby nurses "constantly",
sometimes 4 hours at a time during the day, and then every hour on the hour
during the rest of the day. THEN, baby sleeps through the night - from
midnight to 9 or 10 am! She says the baby sometimes will awake at around 6
a.m., nurses for 15 minutes, and easily falls asleep again until later in the
morning.

Baby is gaining weight well, looks great, and stools up to 10 times per day
(good size stools). Mom states that her breasts do not become engorged during
this incredibly long stretch of sleep through the night, but her milk supply
is doing fine.

IS this mom incredibly lucky, or should she worry about possibly losing her
milk supply in the future? I've never heard of a 2-week old sleeping this
long of a stretch, but my heart tells me that since this baby is nursing so
frequently during the day until midnight, that this is a variation that is
probably ok since baby is gaining well and mom's supply seems intact right
now.

I'd like to know if any other LCs have heard of this type of sleep pattern in
such a young infant, and what YOU tell the mom. THANKS!
