This was one of my tasks this week.  We had one anesthesiologist who was
doing the same thing.  He wrote in his notes that the nurses were not
compliant with his instructions because we were letting the baby nurse.  The
other patient said it was ridiculous and she was not going to pump and dump.
I spoke with the chairman of the department and loaned him a copy of Hale's
book.  In my letter asking him to clarify the policy, I pointed out that
"given the known risks of artificial feeding, we cannot do anything to hinder
breastfeeding unless it is documented as medically necessary.  I even offered
him Dr. Jack's bib on the dangers.  I also told him that Dr. Hale would
entertain questions from Physicians if he would like to discuss his concerns
with him.  Dr. Lawrence will do the same.
We'll see what happens.
