I received a call the other day from a mom, 2 weeks postpartum with 2nd baby.
She had a mastectomy 3 years ago - breast lump detected while nursing her 13
month
old. She feels breastfeeding is going well - baby was back to birthwt in less
than 2 weeks and is devastated that her oncologist wants her to stop
breastfeeding because the tumor marker for CA27 & 29 came back elevated last
week. Her doctor wants to check the level again after she has stopped
breastfeeding. Her question, and mine: are there any studies, research,
literature that addresses breastfeeding and tumor markers? She is wondering
if perhaps breastfeeding hormones may contribute to an elevated level - she
states that levels are often elevated during pregnancy. Thanks in advance for
any info and/or advice.
