Hello All,

I am working with a mother who is 9 weeks pregnant and nursing a 13 month
old baby. I have her permission to post to Lactnet. Her doctor has
instructed her to wean "because nipple stimulation causes contractions and
could cause miscarriage." She has no previous history of preterm labor or
preterm birth. Her first pregnancy was uncomplicated, and she has had no
complications with this pregnancy. She nurses her baby about twice a day for
a total nursing time of about 15 minutes a day. She states that she mostly
nurses her baby for comfort to help her sleep and would like to continue
while she is pregnant.

I would appreciate references to any research supporting the safety of
breastfeeding during pregnancy that she could present to her physician. Any
other advice on how to deal with this situation would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Christy Van Orman, RN, BSN, IBCLC
